About This England

This England is the quarterly magazine for everyone who loves England’s scenery, heritage, history and people.

Launched in 1968 with the light-hearted slogan, “as refreshing as a pot of tea” and with a mission of “poetry not politics”, it is packed with absorbing articles, beautiful photography and uplifting stories and poems celebrating all that is best about England.

Inside This England spring 2024 issue

Our latest issue of This England rounds up the very best of spring across the country.

We head to Worcestershire as Deborah Stone discovers the beauty of the Vale of Evesham’s famous Blossom Trail. Meanwhile, Steve Roberts documents the fascinating history of the area and Editor Angela takes a leisurely cruise on the Severn.

This spring also marks an important anniversary: 200 years of the National Gallery. Isobel King outlines the history of this renowned art institution and rounds up the highlights and the events being held for its 200 magnificent years. Another 200 year anniversary we mark in this issue is a remarkable two centuries since the birth of Wilkie Collins, author of the first detective novel. Orlando Murrin celebrates the crime-fiction genre, reflecting on how far it has evolved and how popular it is today.

And of course, that’s not all…

Historic Homes of England

Chris Franks visits the dramatic Bolton Castle in the Yorkshire Dales and walks us through its many ups and downs of the past.

In Praise of Modern Britain

Brian Viner reveals his love for Doodle Dogs.

Made in England

Jeremy Flint learns the age-old art of wheel-making in Devon as he meets one of the few remaining traditional wheelwrights in the country.

Walks of Life

Susan Buchanan looks fondly on her years as a Rambler and shares the joy rambling has brought to her life.

The Masters of Marmalade

Margaret Mather discovers the delights of the Dalemain World Marmalade Festival in the Cumbrian countryside.

Why We Love a Morris

Richard Webber meets the current day devotees of this cherished motor manufacturer.

Plus, Cornucopia, a chat with Tracey Edwards MBE, the best books of the season, a fabulous spring diary and much, much more. We hope you enjoy every page!

Angela Linforth, Editor of This England Angela Linforth, Editor of This England

Meet the Editor: Angela Linforth

It is my absolute joy to be the editor of This England - what a voyage of discovery! I’m the third editor in the history of this wonderful magazine, having taken over in 2018.

I have been a journalist and editor for most of my working life, although I had a foray briefly into the traditional English hand-made furniture industry.

What I love about This England is its breadth of subject matter. While one day I can be learning about the history of aviation, or the favourite dogs of the royal family, the next I can be sailing up the River Severn or visiting Berkeley Castle to see the site of Edward II’s supposed death by red-hot poker (something I was reminded of, of course, through the pages of This England).

In the five years that I’ve been here I’ve discovered so many fascinating things about our country, which despite the best efforts of our leaders, continues to thrill.

I have also absolutely loved the interactions with you, our wonderful readers, who are always coming forward with such a wealth of good ideas for the magazine, pithy comments on our features and feedback on aspects of this country that are little known and wonderful to discover.

If you want to get in touch, share a story or comment on anything in the magazine, please email us at editor@thisengland.co.uk or write to us at This England, 185-186 Fleet Street, London EC4A 2HS.
