Many people believe that February 14th was made Valentine’s Day as a way to sell cards and presents. But actually, the roots of the occasion date all the way back to Roman times.
Saint Valentine’s Day, as it is traditionally known, was a day of feasting in honour of saints named Valentine, including Saint Valentine of Rome, who was allegedly imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers (who at that time weren’t allowed to be married). But throughout the centuries, the celebrations changed and it was in the UK where the custom of sending presents, cards, flowers and chocolates to the object of your affections first began.
And now, February 14th is now considered the most romantic date in the calendar, with many couples choosing to get engaged, married or renew their wedding vows on Valentine’s Day.
