About This England
This England is the quarterly magazine for everyone who loves England’s scenery, heritage, history and people.
Launched in 1968 with the light-hearted slogan, “as refreshing as a pot of tea” and with a mission of “poetry not politics”, it is packed with absorbing articles, beautiful photography and uplifting stories and poems celebrating all that is best about England.
Meet the Editor: Angela Linforth
It is my absolute joy to be the editor of This England - what a voyage of discovery! I’m the third editor in the history of this wonderful magazine, having taken over in 2018.
I have been a journalist and editor for most of my working life, although I had a foray briefly into the traditional English hand-made furniture industry.
What I love about This England is its breadth of subject matter. While one day I can be learning about the history of aviation, or the favourite dogs of the royal family, the next I can be sailing up the River Severn or visiting Berkeley Castle to see the site of Edward II’s supposed death by red-hot poker (something I was reminded of, of course, through the pages of This England).
In the five years that I’ve been here I’ve discovered so many fascinating things about our country, which despite the best efforts of our leaders, continues to thrill.
I have also absolutely loved the interactions with you, our wonderful readers, who are always coming forward with such a wealth of good ideas for the magazine, pithy comments on our features and feedback on aspects of this country that are little known and wonderful to discover.
If you want to get in touch, share a story or comment on anything in the magazine, please email us at editor@thisengland.co.uk or write to us at This England, 185-186 Fleet Street, London EC4A 2HS.
This England Winter 2024 issue
As we head towards the shortest day and Christmas, we focus on the pleasures of the winter season including a look at that most-beloved institution, the great British pub. Beer writer Michael Clarke explores its history and shares some of his absolute cold-weather favourites.
Speaking of chilly weather, Alex Corlett looks at the age-old tradition of ice-skating on the beautiful Fens of East Anglia, originally introduced as a sport for farm labourers in Victorian times, the tradition still going strong today. Steve Melia too embraces the cold with a frosty walk through ancient Wiltshire from Stonehenge to Salisbury.
Christmas of course isn’t Christmas without a fabulous carol service and Isobel King finds one of the best at Lancing College in Sussex. The magnificent gothic-revival chapel, the largest school chapel in the world, is perched on a cliff and was the vision of the school’s founder Nathaniel Woodard.
And if you find yourself in London this season for a spot of Christmas shopping, why not pay a visit to some of the capital’s lesser-known attractions? Gilly Pickup takes us on an enticing A-Z of London’s more offbeat attractions, away from the festive crowds.
Made in England
Steve Fletcher is the popular clock-maker on our screens in The Repair Shop. Jeremy Flint meets him at his workshop in Witney and discovers why he has followed in the footsteps of his father and grandfather.
The Poppies that Inspired the World
Faith Eckersall on the poignant Tower of London art installation that led to ever-increasing displays of poppies to remember to our fallen
My England
Historian Dan Jones explains why now is the best era in which to live, why he finds Henry V fascinating and he picks some of his favourite places to visit in England.
In Praise of Modern Britain
Our columnist Brian Viner celebrates the fine quality of nostalgia these days.
Plus, great events for the winter months and the Christmas season, the best books, John Betjemen is our Great Briton, Margaret Brecknell explores Burnley and Pendle and David Cummins-Egan visits a winter garden full of colour in Hampshire. Plus, plenty more too.
