About This England

This England is the quarterly magazine for everyone who loves England’s scenery, heritage, history and people.

Launched in 1968 with the light-hearted slogan, “as refreshing as a pot of tea” and with a mission of “poetry not politics”, it is packed with absorbing articles, beautiful photography and uplifting stories and poems celebrating all that is best about England.

Inside This England autumn 2024 issue

As the days begin to shorten, we celebrate the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness with a visit to Herefordshire, for a taste of its spectacular cider heritage and golden colours.

We also take in the Forest of Dean nearby where we discover Puzzlewood a mysterious moss-cloaked corner of ancient woodland, one of the last surviving examples of the UK’s temperate rainforest.

We also go on a tour of England to discover some of the places that our famous flora and fauna are named after. With autumn a time for hunkering down with a good book, Catherine Larner explores the hushed world of the private library, which in these technological times is having a very welcome (and quiet) renaissance. Plus, we feature the best new books of the season.

And as we mark the 150th anniversary of his birth, Winston Churchill is our Great Briton this issue. Our extended feature traces his extraordinary achievements in the face of extreme adversity and explores his complex character and long life. It’s an excellent read.

Made in England

Jeremy Flint meets ornamental woodcarver William Barsley whose beautiful intricately carved works follow in the tradition of Grinling Gibbons.

In Praise of Modern Britain

Our columnist Brian Viner is a fan of modern football stadiums and their many comforts, which he contrasts to the grounds of his youth.

In Good Shape for the Future

We discover the extraordinary sixteen-sided house A la Ronde in Devon with its restored shell gallery, feather friezes and grand tour souvenirs.

The Joys of Detecting

Amanda Jane Davies on the many charms of metal detecting and James Austen explains why the BBC comedy Detectorists was such a hit.

Plus: Cornucopia, the extraordinary story of the secret World War II codebreakers who aided Bletchley Park from a forest in Poland, LS Lowry’s atmospheric seascapes, best events for the autumn and much, much more.

Angela Linforth, Editor of This England Angela Linforth, Editor of This England

Meet the Editor: Angela Linforth

It is my absolute joy to be the editor of This England - what a voyage of discovery! I’m the third editor in the history of this wonderful magazine, having taken over in 2018.

I have been a journalist and editor for most of my working life, although I had a foray briefly into the traditional English hand-made furniture industry.

What I love about This England is its breadth of subject matter. While one day I can be learning about the history of aviation, or the favourite dogs of the royal family, the next I can be sailing up the River Severn or visiting Berkeley Castle to see the site of Edward II’s supposed death by red-hot poker (something I was reminded of, of course, through the pages of This England).

In the five years that I’ve been here I’ve discovered so many fascinating things about our country, which despite the best efforts of our leaders, continues to thrill.

I have also absolutely loved the interactions with you, our wonderful readers, who are always coming forward with such a wealth of good ideas for the magazine, pithy comments on our features and feedback on aspects of this country that are little known and wonderful to discover.

If you want to get in touch, share a story or comment on anything in the magazine, please email us at editor@thisengland.co.uk or write to us at This England, 185-186 Fleet Street, London EC4A 2HS.

Support your favourite read with a great-value subscription direct from the publisher, ensuring that you do not miss the latest serving of quality, engaging content.

Publisher of This England, DC Thomson is a leading media organisation in the UK. Established in 1905, DC Thomson publishes a huge selection of popular magazines and newspapers covering daily news, comics and lifestyle topics.
