The Royal Air Force A Century of Flight Book

Out Of Stock
This beautiful book tells stories from across 100 years of the history of the Royal Air Force using many newly discovered images from archives and private collections. Many of the 400 images in this book are being seen for the very first time and have been restored and printed to the highest standard. It’s not supposed to be a normal history but taken together these illustrated stories show perfectly the essence of the RAF, the spirit, diversity, courage and flexibility across the history of the service. There are well known stories such as that of the Dambusters, 617 Squadron, during their two years of war and the men who fought the Battle of Britain but many are less well known. The importance of Farnborough during the First World War is told in images from the FAST archive. Training in 1920’s North Africa and flying over the Northwest Frontier in the 1930s are both told from private images published for the first time. There are glorious images of the RAF’s fabulous flying boats. There is 74 Squadron in the early 1960s as they receive the RAF’s first Lightning supersonic fighters and the virtually untold story of the Falklands air bridge from Ascension Island, vital for keeping the supply lines open. New images shed light on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and there is a long missing profile of the vital job done by the RAF Regiment. From the First World War to the present day these are classic and unforgettable images. It is a fitting tribute to the RAF’s first century.
