About This England

This England is the quarterly magazine for everyone who loves England’s scenery, heritage, history and people.

Launched in 1968 with the light-hearted slogan, “as refreshing as a pot of tea” and with a mission of “poetry not politics”, it is packed with absorbing articles, beautiful photography and uplifting stories and poems celebrating all that is best about England.

Angela Linforth, Editor of This England Angela Linforth, Editor of This England

Meet the Editor: Angela Linforth

It is my absolute joy to be the editor of This England - what a voyage of discovery! I’m the third editor in the history of this wonderful magazine, having taken over in 2018.

I have been a journalist and editor for most of my working life, although I had a foray briefly into the traditional English hand-made furniture industry.

What I love about This England is its breadth of subject matter. While one day I can be learning about the history of aviation, or the favourite dogs of the royal family, the next I can be sailing up the River Severn or visiting Berkeley Castle to see the site of Edward II’s supposed death by red-hot poker (something I was reminded of, of course, through the pages of This England).

In the five years that I’ve been here I’ve discovered so many fascinating things about our country, which despite the best efforts of our leaders, continues to thrill.

I have also absolutely loved the interactions with you, our wonderful readers, who are always coming forward with such a wealth of good ideas for the magazine, pithy comments on our features and feedback on aspects of this country that are little known and wonderful to discover.

If you want to get in touch, share a story or comment on anything in the magazine, please email us at editor@thisengland.co.uk or write to us at This England, 185-186 Fleet Street, London EC4A 2HS.

This England spring 2025 issue

As the snowdrops start to flower and the daffodils spring back after our hard winter, we start to look forward to Spring and places that we might want to go out and visit. We have plenty of suggestions in our latest issue from our exquisite garden at Ham House to the “Cathdral of the Peak”.

Our cover star is the Crooked House in Lavenham, a small Suffolk town so full of medieval charm that it has no fewer than 351 listed houses. We step inside this unique house and meet its owners, known as the Crooked Men.

Speaking of unique properties, Mairi Hughes marks the 60th anniversary of the Landmark Trust, which has been rescuing quirky buildings, restoring them and renting them out to holiday-makers ever since. She explores the Trust’s history and inspiration and picks some of its most characterful places to stay from tower on a Devon beach to a Yorkshire Hall.

Back to Yorkshire again as we explore the beautiful Richmond with its Wynds, its Georgian theatre and breathtaking Dales countryside around. Ian Collis takes us on a very picturesque tour.

Made in England

Beloved of Wallace and Gromit, the motorbike and sidecar combination is still going strong. Alex Corlett meets the sidecar makers based in the Cotswolds and discovers the unique breezy appeal of this way of travel.

Not Just A Race

We meet Grand National superfan Jane Clarke, whose long-term love of this world-famous race led her to establish a museum at Aintree.

She explains why the race is so compelling, its heritage and how Aintree is now telling its story.

A Pride of Peacocks

Castle Howard is known for its architecture and its starring role in Brideshead Revisited, but Andrew Liddle introduces us to the estate’s peacocks and explains why Spring is the best time to see them.

In Praise of Modern Britain

Brian Viner was a convert to vegetable growing when he moved to the country. He explains its appeal and why today, it’s just a more pleasurable experience than it used to be.

Plus, we have a new look for our Prime Minsters feature - now onto Henry Addington. Cornucopia explores everything from a 6th-century bucket to a search by the Magic Circle.

We look at why Regency style is having a moment, discover the talents of Lucy, Lady Duff-Gordon, our Great Briton, celebrate the village sign and meet the Chelsea Pensioners at their HQ in the capital. There’s much much more too!
